MARY LAKE PROTECTION & REHABILITATION DISTRICT
The Mary Lake Protection & Rehabilitation (P&R) District was formed in 1988 with an initial and ongoing objective to monitor lake quality and to find an ecologically sensitive and viable means to manage fluctuating water levels. While the lake’s water quality remains very healthy, initial efforts in water-level management proved to be more expensive than funding at the time would allow, but the initiative continues with examination of new technologies and funding options.
The Lake District currently comprises approximately 50 private residential properties surrounding a little less than half of the lake, with the National Forest being the largest land-owner (Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest). The Lake District monitors for AIS, water quality, shoreline conditions, aquatic species and fish populations, and is currently engaged in a revision of its Lake Management Plan through an Oconto County grant with UWSP. The District also manages and maintains a fee-based launch within the confines of its boundaries.
The Annual Meeting is usually scheduled for late June, followed by a commissioners’ meeting; then there are 3 quarterly meetings during the course of a fiscal year ending Sept 30. The board consists of 5 directors: 3 are elected by and from the membership; 2 are appointees: 1 each from Langlade County and the Town of Wolf River.
